Ghost at the Deep Well

Astrikos Katoikos

José Raimundo told me
Fisherman by trade
I listened to his story
In amazement and in dread
Said down by the deep dark water
Fish were plenty every night
But deep inside the thicket
Every Friday after midnight
There appeared a haunted sight

The old caboclo told me
With his eyes upon the ground
But I did not believe him
Thought he fooled the folks around
So I laughed and said
I wanna see that ghost
With my own eyes
I will fish down by the deep well
Things from worlds beyond the living
Do not frighten me tonight

Then came Friday evening
In the blackness of the night
I prepared my fishing poles
And strapped my machete tight
And I carried my leather whip
Just to teach that thing a lesson
You should've seen me by the water
Waiting near the deep dark well
For that ghostly apparition

When the clock struck midnight
Thunder started rolling loud
Something burst out from the forest
Crashing wildly through the brush
It was José Raimundo
Coming there to frighten me
He looked ugly as the devil
But the moment he saw my whip
Lord, he turned around to flee

Then I ran right after him
With my leather whip in hand
And I gave him such a beating
That the scars remain today
Now the people fish in peace
And catch plenty every night
Everybody fishes easy
And that haunted place down by the water
Ain't been haunted since that night
