Nobody Gets to Keep It
ZN Rock
I spent about a decade chasing something that would hold
Doing every single thing the older, smarter people told
Did the things they said would do it, got the pieces into place
Then I woke up on a Tuesday with the same look on my face
So I figured I was broken, that the fault was in my head
Took me twenty years of trying to find out what nobody said
It was never built to last
It was never gonna hold
It rolls in like the weather
And the weather leaves you cold
Nobody gets to keep it
Nobody holds it down
It shows up in an ordinary hour
Then it turns itself around
And it's gone before you name it
And it's out there to be found
So I'm not chasing forever anymore
I'm just chasing it around
I had it with the coffee going cold at half past nine
I had it in an argument that never should've been mine
I had it for an hour and I couldn't tell you why
Then it left me by the evening with no reason, no goodbye
So I stopped calling the bad days proof that I was doing wrong
They're just the stretch between the good ones
And the good ones come along
It was never built to last
It was never gonna hold
It rolls in like the weather
And the weather leaves you cold
Nobody gets to keep it
Nobody holds it down
It shows up in an ordinary hour
Then it turns itself around
And it's gone before you name it
And it's out there to be found
So I'm not chasing forever anymore
I'm just chasing it around
I used to think the answer
Was a door I hadn't tried
Some address, some decision
Some corner of my life I'd never ride
But there's no door
There's no key
There's just this, and there's just me
And it's enough
It's enough for me
Nobody gets to keep it
Nobody holds it down
It showed up in an ordinary hour
And it turned itself around
And it's gone and I'll go looking
'Cause I know it comes back round
I'm not chasing forever anymore
I'm just chasing it around
I'm just chasing it around
Chasing it around
(It always comes back)
Chasing it around
(It always comes back)
I'm just chasing it around
